2026 Family Caregiver Pay Rates: The “Experience-Based” Model

If you are caring for a family member with a disability, you are doing skilled work. You manage medications, handle complex mobility transfers, and navigate behavioral needs.

Yet, many home care agencies in Colorado pay a flat “entry-level” wage—often hovering around $17.00/hour—regardless of how many years you have been doing this work.

At Caregivers First Choice, we believe expertise deserves reward. We have introduced Colorado’s first Experience-Based Wage Ladder for Community First Choice (CFC) and IHSS attendants.

The 2026 Wage Ladder

Instead of a flat rate, your pay is determined by your documented years of caregiving experience.

  • Tier 1: Entry Level ($19-$22/hour)
    • For: Caregivers with 0–2 years of experience.
    • Why it helps: This starting rate is already above the projected 2026 state minimum for direct care workers ($17.00).
  • Tier 2: Experienced ($19.95-$23.10/hour)
    • For: Caregivers with 2–5 years of experience.
    • Why it helps: This tier recognizes that you have mastered the basics and require less training and oversight than a new hire.
  • Tier 3: Expert ($20.90-$24.20/hour)
    • For: Veteran caregivers with 5+ years of experience.
    • Why it helps: If you have been managing complex care for a spouse or child for years, you are an expert. You shouldn’t be paid like a beginner. This rate is nearly 30% higher than the market average.

How We Afford to Pay More: The “Caregiver-First” Model

You might wonder how a local agency can beat the rates of national providers. The answer is simple: We believe the lion’s share of Medicaid funding belongs in your pocket, not ours.

At Caregivers First Choice, we have built our entire business model around one goal: getting maximum funding to the caregiver. We achieve this through three strategic pillars:

    1. Smart Technology: By utilizing sophisiticated tools and automating our payroll, we eliminate the bloated administrative costs that weigh down other agencies.
    2. Medicaid Expertise: Our deep knowledge of Colorado’s 2026 rules means we don’t waste resources on denied claims or inefficient staffing. We get it right the first time, keeping our overhead lean.
    3. 100% Local Independence: We do not answer to outside investors, private equity firms, or distant shareholders. Unlike corporate agencies that must distribute profits to investors out of state, we keep that funding right here—reinvesting it into our community and, most importantly, into your paycheck.

It’s Not Just About the Hourly Rate
Your total monthly income is a combination of your Hourly Rate x Authorized Hours.

Under the new 2026 “Soft Caps” for Community First Choice, eligible members can access substantial hours for Personal Care and Health Maintenance.

  • Example: A Tier 3 Spouse ($22/hr) providing the soft-cap limit of ~6.5 hours of Personal Care daily could earn significantly more than with an agency that caps wages at $17/hr to feed their bottom line.

Ready to Get Paid What You’re Worth?

If you have the experience, we have the pay structure to match it. Don’t settle for a flat rate that ignores your years of dedication.
